Henry Dele Alake Biography
Henry Dele Alake is one of the most popular and richest Journalist who was born on October 6, 1956 in Ekiti State, Nigeria. Alake was appointed Special Adviser on Information and Strategy in June 1999 by Senator Bola Tinubu, the Lagos State Governor. Alake was appointed the State Commissioner of Information and Strategy on 6 October 1999 after the former Bureau of Information and Strategy was reverted to ministerial status. This position he held and he performed admirably until 2007. The ministry that Alake was appointed to head the Lagos State Information machinery was the Ministry of Information, Sports and Culture. Alake sought and received the governor’s permission to amend the ministry of Information and Strategy. This was to remove culture and sports from the ministry to make it more relevant and agile to meet the modern Information management challenges in an emerging democracy. Alake was thus the first Nigerian Information and Strategy Commissioner.
In 2010, Alake revealed his intention to contest the senatorial seat of Ekiti Central in Ekiti State. However his political aspiration was cut short by intra-party crisis which made him to quit the senatorial race.
Alake became interested in politics after he was appointed Adviser on Information by his mentor and employer, Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola, the Concord Group of Newspapers’ publisher, was assigned to Abiola’s 1993 presidential campaign and election. Alake, who was Sunday Concord’s editor, was involved in the electioneering campaign that led to the eventual victory of M.K.O., a business magnate. Abiola in the controversial 12 juin 1993 Presidential Election in Nigeria. Alake was tortured and terrorized by the oppressive junta led by Late General Sani Abacha in the aftermath of the arbitrarily cancelled presidential election result. This was because of his candour and boldness in requesting the annulment of the 12 Juni 1993 Presidential Election. Alake went into exile, where he joined other patriots such as Senator Bola Tinubu and Lt. General Alani Akinrinade. Professor Bolaji Akinyemi and Chief John Oyegun, as well as other leaders of the National Democratic Coalition of Nigeria (NADECO). Alake continued the difficult fight for democracy’s restoration from that point. In 1995, he returned to Nigeria when the Concord Press was reopened.
Alake started his journalism career as a graduate of Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation (OGBC). He was responsible for the National Youth Service Corps program. Alake completed the Nigerian government’s mandatory one-year national service. He was then appointed as the Senior Sub-Editor at the Lagos State Broadcasting Corporation. This position he held until 1980. Alake had previously served as Current Affairs Officer, Senior Current Affairs Officer. He was promoted to Principal Current Affairs Officer in 1983. Alake’s broadcast media experience led to the creation of Lagos Television (8 or LTV 8), the sister station of the Lagos State Broadcasting Corporation. Alake then moved to print media after a career in broadcast journalism. Alake joined the Concord Press publishers of The Concord Group of Newspapers in late 1985 – Sunday Concord and National Concord. He was a writer and an editor. He was appointed columnist at the National Concord one year after his employment. This position he held until 1989. He was later appointed editor of Sunday Concord in the same year. This post he held until 1995. He was also a columnist for the Sunday Concord before that. In 1995, he was appointed editor of The National Concord. This post he held until June 1999.
Alake is a former vice-president of the Nigerian Guild of editors. He belongs to several national, regional and international professional bodies such as the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), West African Union of Journalists. He has also received several honour and awards for his meritorious service in journalism. He was awarded the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) International Gold Award in 2000, Special Recognition Award, Radio Lagos and Public Service Award, ECHNONEWS amongst others. He was a former chairman Lagos State Broadcasting Corporation Chapel of the N.U.J and is currently a Fellow of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (E.N.G.E).

Alake received his primary education from Surulere Baptist Primary school, Surulere in Lagos, between 1961 and 1967.
